Helen Kendrick Johnson combined writing, editing, poetry, and political activism with organized opposition to woman suffrage. Woman and the Republic, published by D. Appleton in 1897, surveys the United States suffrage movement and argues against extending the vote to women. The book discusses leading campaigners, conventions, legal claims, family roles, and Johnson’s belief that women already exercised social influence outside electoral politics. Born Helen Louise Kendrick in New York State, she attended the Oread Institute and married editor Rossiter Johnson in 1869. Her other work included children’s books, poetry, travel pieces, song collections, reference editing, and writing on Indigenous folklore. She edited the American Woman’s Journal, founded the Meridian Club, and later helped establish the Guidon Club for political study. Woman and the Republic is historically useful as a sustained statement of the anti-suffrage position, though its conclusions were challenged by suffragists then and rejected by the constitutional change that followed.
