Ellie Dean is a pen name. Behind it is Tamara McKinley, born in Australia and raised in England, who had already published a long run of family sagas under her own name before starting the Beach View Boarding House books. Those follow a seaside guesthouse in wartime Sussex across sixteen volumes and a great many lodgers, built for readers who want to stay in one place with the same people for years rather than meet somebody new each time. The rationing, the evacuations and the telegrams are researched properly, and the comfort is deliberate rather than accidental.
