Ellis Peters was the principal crime-fiction pen name of English novelist Edith Pargeter. Her best-known creation, Benedictine monk Brother Cadfael, investigates mysteries amid the social and political tensions of twelfth-century Shrewsbury. Monk’s Hood belongs to The Cadfael Chronicles and combines a death at the abbey with questions of inheritance, loyalty, and herbal knowledge. Bloomsbury identifies Peters as an award-winning mystery writer whose Cadfael stories reached radio and television, while also recording her OBE for services to literature. Beyond that series, she wrote the Inspector Felse investigations and historical fiction under both the Peters and Pargeter names, giving her bibliography a range much broader than one enduring detective.
