Her parents' strained marriage and the disappointment of being stood up by Webster Casey support her skepticism, until Webster returns to her life as a class partner and his cousin Holland offers a different possibility. Inkyard Press published the 336-page novel in March 2021 for teen readers. Martin uses Aubrey's scientific vocabulary to show both her intelligence and her blind spots: observation can clarify a pattern, but it can also become selective when fear shapes the evidence. The friendship between Aubrey and Reese gives the story another measure of loyalty beyond its romantic triangle. Five Ways to Fall Out of Love therefore asks less whether love follows a formula than whether people can revise a conclusion after learning that their first interpretation was incomplete.
