Eric Brown
Eric Brown used the linked Starship Seasons novellas to explore friendship and loss on Chalcedony, a colony world orbiting Delta Pavonis. Starship Fall, published by NewCon Press in 2009, and Starship Winter, issued by PS Publishing in 2012, continue the life of David Conway and the community around Magenta Bay. Interstellar travel by starship has been displaced by Telemass transportation, leaving old vessels and their pilots as reminders of a changing culture. Each seasonal story can stand alone, yet recurring characters and consequences give the sequence the shape of a larger novel. Drugstore Indian Press collected the first four novellas as Starship Seasons in 2013, and Starship Coda later extended the cycle. Brown, a British science-fiction author and longtime Guardian reviewer, wrote across space opera, crime, and shorter speculative forms. These quieter planetary stories show another side of his range, using advanced travel technology less as spectacle than as pressure on memory, work, aging, and chosen community.
