Éric Chevillard is a French novelist whose fiction treats language, logic, and narrative expectation as materials for comic experiment. Palafox centers on a creature that refuses every stable classification, changing across categories while experts attempt to name, train, and explain it. First published by Éditions de Minuit in 1990, the novel reached English readers through Wyatt Mason's translation for Archipelago Books. Prehistoric Times, translated by Alyson Waters, gives its monologue to a museum guide and would-be archaeologist whose thoughts about a decorated cave keep branching into art, history, identity, and posterity. Archipelago issued that English edition in 2012. Both books turn digression into structure, allowing their narrators' efforts to impose order to generate fresh uncertainty. Chevillard's long association with Éditions de Minuit includes novels from Mourir m'enrhume through La Chambre à brouillard, while these two translations offer especially clear examples of his playful, anti-realist approach to character and form.
