Jacob’s Room

Published in 1922, this was the novel where Virginia Woolf first broke fully with conventional storytelling. It follows Jacob Flanders from a Cornish boyhood through Cambridge and into the drawing rooms and studios of pre-war London, yet Jacob himself stays curiously out of reach. Rather than tell us who he is, Woolf builds him from fragments, the impressions of the women and friends around him, overheard talk, empty rooms, small unfinished scenes. The method lets her circle themes of memory, youth, and the waste of a generation, since the shadow of the coming war hangs over every page.
