Eric McCormack was a Scottish-born Canadian novelist and scholar whose fiction combines Gothic unease, absurdity, travel, and puzzles of identity. The Mysterium follows a journalist investigating an isolated town after a baffling event, using the form of a mystery while repeatedly unsettling the assumptions behind any single explanation. First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women takes its title from John Knox's sixteenth-century polemic but builds a modern, layered narrative of family history, documents, and inherited stories. McCormack was born in Bellshill, Scotland, and later taught English at St. Jerome's University in Waterloo, Ontario. His books include Inspecting the Vaults, The Paradise Motel, The Dutch Wife, and Cloud. The Mysterium and First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women show his characteristic interest in narrators who gather fragments across places and generations, only to discover that explanation can multiply uncertainty rather than end it.
