Eric Pierpoint

Eric Pierpoint, an American actor and novelist, turned a longstanding interest in Western history into historical adventure for school-age readers. The Last Ride of Caleb O’Toole follows twelve-year-old Caleb and his sisters after they are orphaned in Kansas in 1877. Pursued by the Blackstone gang after witnessing a crime, the children travel toward an aunt’s home in Montana, facing the hazards of the Oregon and Bozeman Trails. Sourcebooks Young Readers issued this 2013 volume and identifies it for readers aged nine to twelve. Pierpoint drew on his family’s pioneer background and personally traced the route used in the story, giving the adventure a clear geographical spine. The book received the Reading the West Book Award and combines a fast pursuit with questions about responsibility, changing frontier communities, and the stories later generations tell about the West. For readers, Pierpoint’s acting career is useful context, but the novel’s strongest identity comes from its historical setting and Caleb’s promise to keep his family together.
