Erik Didriksen is a software engineer, musician, and poet whose playful verse recasts familiar popular songs in Shakespearean form. Pop Sonnets collects one hundred of these transformations, preserving recognizable subjects and verbal cues while rebuilding each song as fourteen lines with patterned rhyme and meter. Andrews McMeel published the collection in 2015 after Didriksen’s project had gained an audience online. The selections range across decades and performers, placing artists such as Johnny Cash, Katy Perry, Michael Jackson, and Talking Heads inside an Elizabethan poetic frame. Didriksen’s method depends on more than replacing modern vocabulary with archaic words. He works within the formal constraints of the English sonnet while keeping enough of each source song’s identity for readers to recognize it, often from the opening phrase. The result functions as literary parody, a demonstration of poetic technique, and an invitation to compare how rhythm, diction, and structure change the effect of a familiar lyric.
