Hamish Hendry, also recorded as James Hamish Hendry, built a literary career across Scottish poetry, journalism, and editing. His work connected Glasgow publishing with the city’s literary life. He joined Blackie and Son in 1888 and wrote Burns From Heaven for the centenary commemorations of Robert Burns in 1896. D. Bryce & Son issued a second edition in 1897 under the fuller title Burns from Heaven: With Some Other Poems. A surviving title-page etching by Scottish artist David Young Cameron shows the care given to the volume’s presentation. Hendry belonged to the Glasgow Ballad Club, worked for a period in London journalism, and later became a leader writer for the Glasgow Evening News. His other work included A Scots Dominie, while manuscripts held by the National Library of Scotland preserve poems, prose, and correspondence. Burns From Heaven places his verse within the vigorous Burns commemoration culture of late nineteenth-century Scotland and within a broader career devoted to poetry and the press.
