Ernest Favenc was an Australian explorer, journalist, historian, and fiction writer whose travels informed his accounts of inland exploration. The Explorers of Australia and their Life-work surveys the people and expeditions that mapped large parts of the continent, arranging their achievements within a broader narrative of colonial discovery. Published in 1908 by Whitcombe and Tombs, the volume appeared in the Makers of Australasia series and included an introduction by John Forrest. Favenc had practical experience of the terrain he described. In the late 1870s he led an expedition commissioned to examine country west of Queensland toward Darwin, and his later writing ranged from exploration history to stories of bush life. The Explorers of Australia and their Life-work combines biographical sketches with routes, obstacles, rival claims, and what successive journeys changed. It reflects both Favenc’s field knowledge and the assumptions of its period, making it a useful record of how Australian exploration was narrated during the early 1900s.
