Eugene Yelchin is a Russian American author and illustrator whose children's novels often examine Soviet history through the constrained choices of young protagonists. Arcady’s Goal follows a twelve-year-old boy living in a children's home after his parents are declared enemies of the state. Macmillan describes soccer as Arcady's means of earning food, respect, protection, and perhaps a route into a different life. Kirkus independently identifies Yelchin as both writer and illustrator, places the story in Stalin's Soviet Union, and calls it a companion to the Newbery Honor book Breaking Stalin’s Nose. The drawings do more than decorate the narrative; their shifts in scale and mood deepen its sense of surveillance, fear, and hope. Arcady's athletic ability drives the plot, but the possibility of trust between two damaged people gives the book its emotional center.
