F.J. Campbell
F.J. Campbell adapts the relationship pattern of Far from the Madding Crowd for The Islanders, setting the story at an isolated boarding school. Weatherbury Hall stands in the countryside of southwest England, and pupils call it the Island because of its separation from ordinary life. Beth arrives for sixth form with money, confidence, and social ease, then meets Milo, Edward, and Zack. Their rival attractions develop through plays, sport, parties, friendship, and the private pressures of adolescence. The book first reached digital readers in 2018, followed by Matador's print release in 2019. Campbell writes teen fiction and draws on familiarity with boarding-school life without treating Beth's plot as autobiography. The Hardy framework supplies competing attachments, but the modern school changes the meaning of dependence and independence. Each character is approaching life beyond Weatherbury Hall, so romantic choice also becomes a test of status, judgment, and emerging self-knowledge.
