Felicity Everett writes about friendships, families, ambition, and the pressures hidden inside apparently comfortable lives. The British novelist and former children’s publishing editor grew up in Manchester, studied English literature, and worked in London publishing before producing numerous children’s fiction and nonfiction titles. After completing creative-writing study at Goldsmiths, she moved into fiction for mature readers with The Story of Us, followed by novels including The People at Number 9 and The Move. Old Friends is a domestic drama published by HQ, an imprint of HarperCollins. It brings two long-connected couples into a shared home in northern England, where career frustrations, parenting choices, envy, and old loyalties disturb their plan for a communal fresh start. Everett uses the arrangement to test how much intimacy a friendship can withstand when money, space, and midlife dissatisfaction become impossible to conceal.
