The title is what Hill's father told her about Bishop Auckland, the County Durham town where she was brought up after the coal industry that had employed him and his father closed. She got out through St Andrews, Harvard and a doctorate in history, became an American citizen, and served as national intelligence officer for Russia and Eurasia before joining the National Security Council in 2017 as senior director for Europe and Russia. She resigned in July 2019 and testified that November in the first impeachment inquiry, an appearance that made her briefly famous. There Is Nothing For You Here, published in October 2021, sets her own route out against the decline of industrial regions in both countries and argues that the two populist turns grew from the same ground. She is a senior fellow at Brookings and was installed as chancellor of Durham University in June 2023.
