Florence Wheelock Ayscough

Florence Wheelock Ayscough was a writer, sinologist, editor, and translator whose work introduced English-language readers to Chinese literature. Fir-Flower Tablets, published by Houghton Mifflin in 1921, was prepared with the poet Amy Lowell and presents translations from Chinese poetry. Project Gutenberg identifies Ayscough and Lowell as co-translators, while bibliographic records describe the volume as an English collection of Chinese verse. Ayscough was born in Shanghai in 1878 and spent much of her life studying Chinese language, art, and culture. She also served as a librarian for the North China Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society in Shanghai and later lectured in the United States. Her other writing continued this cross-cultural work through studies of Chinese poetry, travel, and daily life. In Fir-Flower Tablets, her textual knowledge was paired with Lowell’s poetic judgment, making the book both a translation project and a literary collaboration shaped for readers encountering these poems in English.
