Fred Saberhagen
Fred Saberhagen wrote science fiction and fantasy that ranged from robotic space stories to reconstructed myth. Gods of Fire and Thunder, published by Tor in 2002, is the fifth Book of the Gods novel and retells Germanic myth. The Veils of Azlaroc is a 1978 standalone work that the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction identifies among his more sustained early novels. Golden Reflections, edited by Joan Spicci Saberhagen and Robert E. Vardeman, builds around his novel The Mask of the Sun. The anthology adds original work by Walter Jon Williams, Daniel Abraham, John Maddox Roberts, Harry Turtledove, Jane Lindskold, Dean Wesley Smith, and David Weber. Saberhagen’s wider career includes the Berserker stories about robotic spacecraft and the Swords and Lost Swords fantasy sequences, while the Books of the Gods recast myths from several traditions. From 1967 to 1973, he wrote and edited science and technology material for Encyclopaedia Britannica, overlapping with his early fiction career.
