High Aztech, published by Tor Books in 1992, follows underground poet and journalist Xolotl Zapata through a future Tenochtitlán where engineered viruses can transmit religious belief. The novel mixes English, Spanish, and Nahuatl-inflected language while imagining Mexico as a technological power after the Armageddon War. Scholars have read the book as Chicano cyberpunk, emphasizing its treatment of mestizaje, colonial history, migration, and posthuman identity. A 2016 reissue from Strange Particle Press added Hogan's retrospective introduction and illustrations, extending the life of a book first issued in Tor's Ben Bova Presents line. Hogan's related novels include Cortez on Jupiter and Smoking Mirror Blues, and his short fiction has appeared in Amazing Stories and Analog.
