Fumio Sasaki

1979

Was an editor living in a cluttered Tokyo flat, drinking too much and comparing himself to everyone, and got rid of almost everything he owned.

Goodbye, Things is the account and the argument: that possessions demand attention, that we buy to signal value to other people, and that the freed attention is the actual return rather than the tidiness.

Sasaki is more radical than the tidying books, and more honest that minimalism is a means and not a personality. He is clear it worked for him without claiming it will work for anyone.
