Gail Godwin is an American fiction writer, memoirist, and librettist whose fiction often examines memory, family bonds, and moral responsibility. Flora, published by Bloomsbury in 2013, is narrated by Helen Anstruther as she looks back on a decisive summer near the end of the Second World War. Ten-year-old Helen and her young guardian, Flora, remain isolated in a family house while Helen’s father undertakes secret work at Oak Ridge. The arrangement exposes grief, pride, affection, and consequences that Helen can understand fully only in retrospect. Godwin grew up in North Carolina and studied at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where she later taught. Her novels include The Odd Woman, A Mother and Two Daughters, The Finishing School, and Evensong, and three of her books became National Book Award finalists. Flora continues her sustained interest in how later memory revises childhood judgment. Its intimate setting allows a single relationship to carry questions of loss, remorse, and the stories families tell about themselves.
