Author: George Parsons Lathrop
George Parsons Lathrop worked as an American poet, novelist, editor, and critic within nineteenth-century literary culture. Born in 1851, he held posts at The Atlantic Monthly and later worked with the Boston Courier, combining journalism with poetry and fiction. His marriage to Rose Hawthorne, daughter of Nathaniel Hawthorne, also connected him closely with one of the period’s prominent literary families. Dreams and Days appeared in 1892 with the fuller title Dreams and Days: Poems. The collection moves among landscape, memory, love, faith, and public commemoration, bringing together lyrics and longer occasional pieces. Lathrop also wrote A Study of Hawthorne and edited material associated with his father-in-law, while his own novels included Afterglow and Newport. The collection represents his poetry within a career spanning criticism, editing, narrative prose, and published verse.
