About this book
The English Novel is by George Saintsbury, Professor of English Literature in the University of Edinburgh. The preface says it is somewhat curious that there is, so far as the author knows, no complete handling in English of the subject of this volume. The preface discusses Dunlop's History of Fiction, an excellent book that dealt with a much wider matter, and Sir Walter Raleigh's English Novel, which stops short at Miss Austen.
The book describes King Horn as less powerful and rather more cut and dried, with a hero whose father is killed by pirate invaders and who is himself set adrift in a boat. The text mentions the famous chapter of the Black Pall in Chateau le Blanc and touches of really or supposedly horrible objects in the dark and faint suggestions of sound. The text says the more widely and the longer a man reads, the more constantly will he find that Scott has been before him.
