George Santayana was a philosopher, poet, critic, and novelist whose work examined reason, imagination, culture, and the place of human life within nature. Sonnets and other verses, first published in 1894, belongs to his early poetic career and shows the formal discipline that remained important to his prose style. The Life of Reason appeared in five volumes between 1905 and 1906, tracing reason through common sense, society, religion, art, and science under the broader subtitle The Phases of Human Progress. Philosophical Opinion in America, published in 1918, considers major currents in American thought and the institutional setting in which they developed. Born in Madrid and raised partly in Boston, Santayana studied and taught at Harvard before leaving academic life and settling permanently in Europe. His students included figures who later shaped American literature and philosophy. Across these three works, poetry, intellectual history, and systematic philosophy remain distinct forms, yet each asks how ideals arise from lived experience and how reflective thought can clarify without escaping the natural world.
