About this book
The preface explains that many of the soliloquies had appeared in reviews and that the articles are reprinted with editorial permission. The preface notes that not a few later pieces were written abroad, although still mostly concerned with English themes and impressions. Grisaille describes England through luminous haze that softens distances, changes familiar objects and harmonizes accidental features.
The discussion of self-portraiture suggests that art can express a spirit more justly than ordinary looks or casual grimaces. The account of character describes people confident in their minds, proud of office or anxious about duty as assuming a tragic mask. The discussion calls William James a radical empiricist and connects the being of light with idea and experience.
