Arthur Tappan Pierson served as an American Presbyterian pastor, editor, lecturer, and advocate for missions. His ministry crossed the Atlantic, and he occupied London's Metropolitan Tabernacle pulpit after Charles Spurgeon's death while addressing conferences in Britain and the United States. George Muller of Bristol, first published in 1899, is his topical biography of George Müller, the preacher and orphanage director whose work Pierson knew personally. Rather than repeating Müller's multivolume autobiography, Pierson organized the account around prayer, faith, stewardship, and the development of the Bristol institutions. James Wright, Müller's son-in-law, contributed an introduction to the edition. Pierson also edited The Missionary Review of the World and wrote widely on biblical interpretation, preaching, and missionary history. Boston University's History of Missiology records the biography within that larger career, while later publisher descriptions preserve its structure and purpose. George Muller of Bristol remains among Pierson's best-known books because it joins firsthand acquaintance, documentary narrative, and the theological concerns that shaped his public work.
