Ogden gives labor and landscape substantial weight, using trails, ranches, weather, and local rivalries to shape the action. P. V. E. Ivory illustrated the original edition, connecting the novel to the visual tradition of early twentieth-century Western publishing. The Duke of Chimney Butte reflects Ogden’s broader interest in working people who must establish their character far from formal institutions.
