About this book

Claim Number One by George W. Ogden carries a picture line reading The crowd parted and opened a lane for a dusty man on a sweat-drenched horse to pass. The contents list names, among others, chapters titled Guests for the Metropole, The Flat-Game Man and The Governor’s Son. Of all the disheartened, blue, and beaten men on a dusty train, Dr. Warren Slavens, late of Missouri, was without question the deepest down in the quagmire of failure.

Agnes Horton has a station on the train directly behind the doctor's seat. A man with a bloody bandage about his head has come through the leagues of desert, and at the sight of that bandage a woman's heart feels a strange exultation. Smith drives off with almost as grand a flourish as he used to execute when setting out from Comanche on the stage.
