Gerard LaSalle is a physician, filmmaker, sculptor, and historical novelist whose work focuses on the nineteenth-century Pacific Northwest. Widow Walk opens his Widow Walk Saga in 1857, when settlers, Indigenous communities, soldiers, and traders confront growing conflict around Washington Territory and San Juan Island. The novel follows Emmy Evers as she tries to protect her family while her husband is often away, placing a household story within disputes over land, borders, and colonial expansion. LaSalle’s later volumes Isthmus and The Fairness of Beasts carry the Evers family into Panama, Boston, and the American Civil War. That combination of disciplines informs a narrative method grounded in documented settings but organized around invented lives. Widow Walk therefore serves as both the historical saga’s family origin and LaSalle’s introduction as a historical novelist.
