Asta Bowen

Asta Bowen teaches and writes, and her best-known novel imagines wolf restoration from an animal-centered perspective. Wolf: The Journey Home follows Marta, an alpha female separated from a relocated Montana pack, as she searches for familiar territory and eventually forms another pack. The story first appeared in 1997 as Hungry for Home: A Wolf Odyssey, then was revised and retitled for a later Bloomsbury edition. Bowen spent years studying wolves and drew on records surrounding the Pleasant Valley pack, which federal wildlife officials moved in 1989. Writers on the Range calls the novel a fictionalized account of wolves returning to the northern Rockies before the Yellowstone reintroduction. Bowen avoids turning the animals into disguised people, instead building the narrative from pack behavior, territory, hunting, and survival. Wolf: The Journey Home therefore combines natural-history observation with environmental fiction, presenting restoration not as an abstract policy success but as a dangerous experience lived by individual animals.
