Gertrude Landa

Gertrude Landa wrote Jewish Fairy Tales and Legends under the familiar byline Aunt Naomi. First published by Bloch Publishing in 1919, the collection retells stories drawn from biblical, rabbinic, and folk traditions for young readers. Its subjects range from sages and rulers to wonder-working animals, enchanted objects, and moral tests. Sol Aronson supplied the illustrations for the original volume. Project Gutenberg and Sacred Texts preserve the book as part of the historical record of English-language Jewish children's literature. Landa's accessible storytelling combines adventure, humour, ethical lessons, and explanations of communal customs, giving later readers a view of how traditional narratives were adapted for family reading in the early twentieth century.
