Gillian Bradshaw writes historical fiction informed by classical study and a close interest in how ordinary lives meet political power. Imperial Purple, published by Houghton Mifflin in 1988, is set in the fifth-century Byzantine world and follows Demetrias, a highly skilled silk weaver in Tyre. Ordered to make an imperial cloak whose measurements do not fit Emperor Theodosius II, she recognizes evidence of a plot but has little freedom to refuse the commission. Her attempt to protect her family carries the story from the workshops of Tyre toward court conflict involving the emperor and his sister Pulcheria. Bradshaw builds the novel around the economic and symbolic importance of purple dye, making textile craft central to both character and intrigue. Imperial Purple was also issued in Britain as The Colour of Power. It belongs beside The Beacon at Alexandria and The Bearkeeper’s Daughter among Bradshaw’s novels of late antiquity, where documented settings support invented protagonists facing the constraints of rank, work, and empire.
