Giosuè Carducci was an Italian poet, critic, and literary scholar whose public career joined classical learning to the politics and culture of a newly unified nation. He held Bologna's chair of Italian literature from 1860 until 1903 and became the first Italian to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, awarded in 1906. Poems of Italy presents selections from his odes in English translation by M. W. Arms, who also supplied the introduction. The Grafton Press issued the compact collection in 1906, placing patriotic and historical verse before Anglophone readers during Carducci's lifetime. His larger body of poetry includes Juvenilia, Levia Gravia, Giambi ed Epodi, Rime nuove, and Odi barbare. Across those books, he adapted classical meters, invoked Italian landscapes and historical figures, and argued with religious and political orthodoxies. Poems of Italy therefore represents a translated doorway into a much broader poetic project, one grounded in scholarship yet addressed to the civic questions of nineteenth-century Italy.
