James Avis 1830- Bartley
James Avis 1830- Bartley, the Virginia poet otherwise recorded as James Avis Bartley, was born in 1830. Contemporary bibliographic records place him in Orange County and Charlottesville, while archival correspondence shows him approaching publishers about his verse. New Poems gathers work from a writer whose surviving bibliography is rooted in nineteenth-century American poetry. Virginia: with other poems turns repeatedly to the state’s rivers, mountains, history, and local attachments, extending concerns already visible in his earlier Lays of Ancient Virginia and Other Poems. A period reference work described Bartley as a Virginia native and professor, and the Harris Collection catalogue identified his personal dedication and combative preface to an early volume. His poems range from landscape description to patriotic and reflective verse. Read together, New Poems and Virginia: with other poems preserve the work of a regional writer who treated place as both physical scenery and inherited memory.
