Giovanni Verga

Giovanni Verga (1840-1922) was a Sicilian novelist and the leading figure of verismo, Italy's answer to French naturalism. He abandoned fashionable romantic fiction for the fishermen and peasants of his native island. His story Cavalleria rusticana became the basis for Mascagni's opera.
