Gita Trelease
Gita Trelease builds historical fantasy for teenage readers, shaped by her study of literature. Enchantée, her debut novel, places seventeen-year-old Camille Durbonne in 1789, where poverty and family responsibility lead her to use magic. Camille transforms her appearance and enters the court of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette as Baroness de la Fontaine, moving between revolutionary Paris and Versailles. The novel arrived from Macmillan Children’s Books during 2019, and publisher records place it first in a two-book historical fantasy sequence. Magic in the story carries a cost, so glamour and gambling become part of its moral tension rather than simple escape. Trelease earned a doctorate in British literature at New York University. She previously taught writing and fairy tales, interests visible in the book’s attention to disguise, class, and storytelling. Later North American editions retitled Enchantée as All That Glitters, while its continuation appeared as Everything That Burns. Her fiction combines documented upheaval with invented magical systems and young women negotiating political change.
