Glenn McCarty
Glenn McCarty creates comic adventures for children and teaches creative writing. The Misadventured Summer of Tumbleweed Thompson began a sequence that grew from short fiction first shared through Story Warren. The story takes place in 1876 and centers on Eugene Appleton, a cautious boy whose summer changes when the itinerant storyteller Tumbleweed Thompson arrives with extravagant tales and a talent for finding trouble. Joe Sutphin illustrated the book, which first appeared through BookBaby and Fireside Books before Story Warren Books issued a later edition. McCarty continued the characters’ travels in The Golden Road of Tumbleweed Thompson. His other work includes the Dead-Eye Dan books and Junction Tales, showing his continuing interest in frontier storytelling, friendship, and oral tall tales. The Misadventured Summer of Tumbleweed Thompson balances historical atmosphere with comic mishaps, using Eugene’s perspective to test the difference between Tumbleweed’s confident legends and the consequences of their real adventures.
