Author: Godmunder Kamban
Godmunder Kamban is an English-language form used for Guðmundur Kamban, an Icelandic playwright and novelist. Hadda Padda was his first play, written while he studied in Copenhagen and first published by Gyldendal. The Royal Danish Theatre accepted it for literary merit, and its 1914 production brought Kamban broad Scandinavian attention. Set in Iceland, the drama follows Hrafnhild, known as Hadda Padda, through love, pride, family pressure, and a decisive break with Ingolf. The English edition includes an introduction describing Kamban's education in Reykjavík and Copenhagen, his theatrical training under Peter Jerndorff, and his involvement in staging the play. Georg Brandes supplied an admiring foreword. Kamban later wrote additional plays, novels, and screen work, but this drama established the psychological intensity and theatrical ambition that first carried his writing beyond Iceland.
