Grace C Frankland brought laboratory bacteriology into ordinary household and civic questions at the beginning of the twentieth century. Bacteria in Daily Life, issued by Longmans, Green & Co. in 1903, explains how microorganisms move through air, water, milk, food, dust, and sewage while distinguishing useful activity from disease. Rather than treating the subject as an abstract classification of species, Frankland organized the book around practical settings, including water purification, food preparation, and public sanitation. The title page identifies her as Mrs Percy Frankland, a Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society and an honorary member of Bedford College. It also notes her collaborations with Percy Frankland on Micro-organisms in Water and on a Royal Society paper examining the nitrifying process. Contemporary scientific commentary recognized the book's accessible treatment of tuberculosis prevention, milk safety, toxins, and antitoxins. Her work therefore connects specialist microbiology with the public-health choices that shaped daily life during a formative period for germ theory.
