Thomas Henry Huxley was a Victorian biologist, comparative anatomist, educator, and prominent defender of evolutionary science. Evidence as to Man’s Place in Nature, published in 1863, brought together essays comparing humans with other primates and considering fossil evidence. Its famous sequence of skeletons made anatomical comparison central to a public argument about human origins. Conditions of Existence as Affecting the Perpetuation of Living Beings originated as a lecture for working men and explains how environmental circumstances, variation, and competition affect which organisms persist. Huxley trained in medicine, served as assistant surgeon on HMS Rattlesnake, and used that voyage to study marine invertebrates. At the Royal School of Mines he taught natural history; he eventually became president of the Royal Society. His writing joined laboratory and field knowledge with a sustained commitment to public education.
