H. C. Bailey was an English journalist and crime writer best known for stories featuring the medically trained detective Reggie Fortune. Call Mr. Fortune, published by Methuen in 1920, introduced the character in book form through a collection of cases. Mr. Fortune Explains followed in 1930 from Ward, Lock and continued the sequence of short mysteries built around Fortune’s scientific knowledge, unusual manner, and persistent concern with injustice. Bailey’s stories can begin with apparently minor puzzles but often move toward corruption, obsession, violence, or harm concealed by respectable institutions. That darker moral range distinguishes Fortune from a purely comic amateur sleuth, even though his speech and habits can appear whimsical. Bailey also created the lawyer-detective Joshua Clunk and wrote historical fiction, but the Fortune collections became his longest-running contribution to classic detection. Together, Call Mr. Fortune and Mr. Fortune Explains show the series at two stages of its development, from the detective’s first collected appearances to a mature set of investigations a decade later.
