Stanley John Weyman
Stanley John Weyman (1855–1928) was an English novelist who specialized in historical romance, most of it set in France during the religious wars and the reigns of Henry III and Henry IV. His best-known books, "A Gentleman of France" (1893) and "Under the Red Robe" (1894), made him a bestseller in Britain and the United States and earned him the nickname the "Prince of Romance." Trained as a barrister, he turned to fiction after an uneven legal career and lasting ill health, and his tightly plotted swashbucklers influenced a later generation of adventure writers.
