James Hogg

James Hogg (1770-1835), known as the Ettrick Shepherd, was a Scottish poet and novelist who grew up herding sheep with little formal schooling. A friend of Walter Scott, he drew deeply on Border ballads and folklore. His Justified Sinner is now regarded as a masterpiece.
