Håkan Nesser is a Swedish crime writer best known for the Inspector Van Veeteren novels set in the fictional city of Maardam. Borkmann’s Point is the second book in that ten-volume sequence, and Woman with Birthmark is the fourth. Both mysteries pair police procedure with an interest in motive, memory, and the personal histories behind violence. The English editions were translated by Laurie Thompson and published in the United Kingdom by Pan Macmillan. Nesser has also written the Inspector Barbarotti books and stand-alone fiction, but the Van Veeteren series established his international readership and received major Scandinavian crime-writing honors.
