Harlan Hoge Ballard was an American educator, natural-history organiser, and author whose books encouraged observation as a form of learning. Born in 1853, Ballard founded the Agassiz Association in Massachusetts, creating a network of local chapters where amateur naturalists could study plants, animals, and minerals. Three Kingdoms served as a handbook for that association, organising the living and mineral worlds into an accessible guide for members. New National First Reader, prepared with Charles J. Barnes and S. Proctor Thayer, belongs to a different part of Ballard's educational work and presents graded lessons for beginning readers. His bibliography also includes The World of Matter, Pieces to Speak, and a handbook of the St. Nicholas Agassiz Association. Library records connect the two works directly to Ballard, while archival accounts of the Agassiz Association show his role in the late nineteenth-century nature-study movement. Across science instruction and classroom reading, he favoured structured material designed for practical use by learners.
