Jane Addams was a social reformer, writer, and cofounder of Chicago's Hull-House settlement. Democracy and Social Ethics, published by Macmillan in 1902, developed her argument that democratic responsibility grows through everyday relationships across class and occupation. Twenty Years at Hull House drew on two decades of settlement work, combining autobiography with accounts of education, labor reform, neighborhood cooperation, and civic action. Her work at Hull-House connected immigrant neighbors with educational, cultural, and labor programs. The Jane Addams Papers Project records the book's publication by Macmillan in 1910. Addams wrote eleven books as well as hundreds of articles and speeches, according to the National Archives. These two works remain closely connected: the earlier book sets out the ethical reasoning behind social cooperation, while the later one shows those ideas being tested through a particular institution and community.
