Harry Leon Wilson combined fiction, drama, and editing in an American career, with comedy that often examined social performance and the collision of manners. Born in 1867, he wrote fiction for periodicals and collaborated with Booth Tarkington on stage works as well as pursuing his own novels. Ruggles of Red Gap first appeared in book form in 1915 after serialization. Its English valet, Marmaduke Ruggles, is transferred through a card game to an American family and carried from a carefully ordered life into the improvised society of Red Gap in the western United States. Wilson uses Ruggles’s formal habits and changing loyalties to question inherited ideas of class, respectability, and self-invention. The novel’s popularity led to stage and screen adaptations, establishing it as a widely adapted title. Ruggles of Red Gap shares Wilson’s interest in comic outsiders with titles such as The Spenders and Merton of the Movies. Beneath the farce, the book tracks a servant learning to define dignity beyond the hierarchy that once supplied his identity.
