Heinrich Graetz
Heinrich Graetz was a German Jewish historian whose multivolume History of the Jews helped establish a broad narrative of Jewish life across ancient, medieval, and modern periods. He studied Judaism through historical inquiry, taught at the Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau, and combined archival scholarship with sustained attention to collective identity. Historic Parallels in Jewish History began as the opening discourse delivered at the Anglo Jewish Historical Exhibition in London on June 16, 1887. Joseph Jacobs translated the address, which appeared in London that year and also circulated in German as Parallelen aus der jüdischen Geschichte. Graetz compared distant periods to show why individual communities should be studied within a continuous historical record. The English text later appeared among the exhibition papers, while the German version ran in the Monatsschrift für Geschichte und Wissenschaft des Judentums. This compact publication belongs to the same historical project as his larger scholarship, but its origin as a public address gives it a focused institutional purpose and a direct argument for organized historical study.
