Heinrich von Kleist was a German dramatist, storyteller, poet, and journalist whose compressed plots repeatedly test certainty, law, and social judgment. Born in Frankfurt an der Oder in 1777, he left military service, travelled in Europe, and pursued literary work before his death in 1811. The Marquise of O– is among his best-known novellas. Set during wartime in northern Italy, it begins with a widowed aristocrat publicly seeking the unknown father of her unborn child, then reconstructs the violence and failed knowledge behind that announcement. Kleist first published the story in 1808 in Phöbus, the journal he co-edited with Adam Müller. His wider body of work includes the plays The Broken Jug and Penthesilea and the novella Michael Kohlhaas. Publishers including Suhrkamp and S. Fischer continue to treat the story as a major part of his prose. Its formal restraint, abrupt reversals, and morally difficult subject explain why Kleist remains important to readers of German Romantic and early modern European literature.
