Helen Dunmore

Helen Dunmore (1952-2017) worked across poetry, literary novels, short stories and fiction for younger readers. She studied English at York, then taught English as a foreign language in Finland. Going to Egypt, published in 1992, was her first children's novel; Zennor in Darkness followed in 1993 and received the McKitterick Prize. A Spell of Winter won the inaugural Orange Prize for Fiction in 1996. Dunmore also created the five-book Chronicles of Ingo, whose sequence includes The Tide Knot and The Crossing of Ingo alongside Ingo, The Deep and Stormswept. Her poem The Malarkey won the National Poetry Competition, later giving its name to her 2012 collection. The Poetry Society notes that she published ten poetry collections and was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
